Melksham and Devizes Announce Prospective Parliamentary Candidate
Melksham and Devizes Liberal Democrats are delighted to announce that Dr Brian Mathew has been selected as their candidate to stand in the newly formed constituency of Melksham and Devizes.
Boundary changes took effect at the start of 2024 and the new seat includes the towns of Bradford on Avon, Devizes and Melksham as well many surrounding communities and villages.
The Lib Dems have high hopes of toppling the Conservatives in a seat which is currently held by minister Michelle Donelan.
Brian has been a Wiltshire Councillor for Box and Colerne since 2017 and has previously stood for parliament in both North Wiltshire and North Somerset.
Brian says: ‘I am thrilled to be selected as the Lib Dem candidate for Melksham and Devizes, for all the people.’
‘With these boundary changes, a new start comes for all our communities.
‘Lib Dems along with Labour and small ‘c’ conservative and Green voters, revolted by excesses of the Johnson/Truss/Sunak years will at last have the chance to vote for change and choose the Liberal Democrats, with the serious prospect that they will be elected.
‘I want to ensure fairness plays a part in our future in what will hopefully be a much changed and more progressive parliament.
‘I cannot wait to hear from residents in the weeks and months ahead, before Rishi Sunak finally bites the bullet and calls for this badly needed General Election.’
Local Lib Dems will be out in force in Devizes this Sunday to kickstart their campaign with more exciting events lined up.
Prior to local politics Brian spent 30 years as an Aid Worker in Africa, Central America and the Far East. He served two terms as Country Representative for WaterAid in Tanzania, where he also doubled as Honorary Consular Correspondent for the British High Commission.
